1月28〜29日に開催されたIMSA WeatherTecスポーツカー選手権デイトナ24時間レースにおいて、プロトタイプクラスの新型「キャデラックDPi-V.R」がデビュー戦で見事な1-2フィニッシュを飾った。
ノントラブルで新型マシンの完成度を証明
今季より実戦投入されたキャデラックDPi-V.Rは、ダラーラの手掛けるシャシーにキャデラック製6.2リッターV8エンジンを積む。
総合優勝したのはジョーダン・テイラー/リッキーテイラー/マックス・アンゲレッリ/ジェフ・ゴードンがドライバーを務めた「コニカミノルタ」チームの10号車。2位には「マスタング・サンプリング・レーシング」チームの5号車が入った。31号車の「ウェラン・エンジニアリング・レーシング」チームはプロトタイプクラス6位、総合14位だった。
レースは残り10分でトップ2が入れ替わり、第1コーナーで5号車をオーバーテイクした10号車がそのまま逃げ切る形でチャッカーを受けた。10号車はピットレーンでの違反などがあったものの、マシンにはいっさいトラブルが起きず、24時間を無事に走り切った。それはキャデラックの新型マシンの完成度を証明するに十分なパフォーマンスだったといえる。
最高の形でデビュー戦を終えたキャデラック。同社の上級副社長ヨハン・デ・ナイシェンは次のようにコメントしている。
「デイトナ24時間レースで勝利するのは簡単ではありません。新型マシンのデビュー戦でレースを支配できたことは、エンジニアやドライバーをはじめ、チームの努力の賜物です。キャデラックの耐久レースへの復帰は、新しい製品哲学を表現するためです。それは最先端の技術によってラグジュアリーとパフォーマンスを両立させるというものです」。
